By following a thorough vetting process—covering licensing, insurance, safety, and reputation—you can build a reliable network of partners and provide exceptional service to your customers.
Verify Authority and Licensing
Ensure the carrier has an active USDOT number and Motor Carrier Authority. Check their registration in the FMCSA database to confirm they are authorized to operate in the regions you require.
Check Insurance Coverage:
Review the carrier's insurance certificates to confirm adequate liability and cargo coverage. Ensure their coverage aligns with your clients' needs to protect shipments in transit.
Review Safety Ratings and Compliance
Use the FMCSA's SAFER system to evaluate the carrier's safety record, including their Compliance, Safety, Accountability (CSA) scores and any past violations.
Assess Equipment
Confirm the carrier's MC and DOT Number given match what is listed on their truck. Also confirm driver’s identity with dispatch.
Request References and Conduct Background Checks
Ask for references from other brokers or shippers they’ve worked with. Perform background checks to ensure the carrier has a reputation for reliability and professionalism.
